Bladder cancer is where a growth of abnormal tissue, called a tumor, develops in the bladder lining, where it can sometimes stay (non-muscle-invasive or early bladder cancer). It can sometimes spread to the bladder muscle and beyond (invasive). The most common symptom is blood in the urine. There were about 83,730 new cases of bladder cancer (about 64,280 in men and 19,450 in women) in the US in 2021. About 1 in 3 cases of bladder cancer are due to smoking tobacco.
Interestingly, smoking cannabis alone is associated with a lower risk of bladder cancer, according to some research. Bladder cancer is the fourth most common malignancy amongst men in the US, and there are few effective treatments available for it. Cannabinoids could be a very useful treatment for bladder cancer, and many other types of cancer in general.
